Fonts play a big role in the way your visitors perceive information on your website. The fonts used on your site can change the perception of your business, products, or services. Research shows that the semantic memory linked with fonts have an influence on how your target audience feels about your content.

So what are the best fonts to use when designing your website? Here are 5 fonts that can make a huge difference in how your audience views your business.

1. Oswald

Oswald is a sans-serif typeface that is based on the traditional gothic style from the 1800s. You can use bold, normal and light styles based on your requirements. The Ultimate Website Checklist

Is your website up and running or are you about to launch it?

Having a website checklist is essential to make sure nothing is missing from your website and you have crossed all your T and marked all your i.

Let’s cover all the essentials here.

1. SECURITY. As so many people use website building tools to create their website, hackers nowhere to login to your website backend, they then use little evil bots to try and guess your login details and if your website is out of date or you have an easy login username then this can make it easier for them to hack.

The main reason hackers want to access your website is to hijack your website traffic, by adding code that links back to their own websites. Read through my blog post Website security for WordPress and check out our website maintenance packages to help keep your website secure.

2. SPAM PREVENTION. If you have a blog or allow comments on your pages, products etc then you need to have a good Antispam plugin. This is to prevent random spam comments.

Some businesses try to divert your website traffic to their pages so they might add a comment like “Great post, check out…….” And they then link it back to their website, this is called black hat SEO and can lower your search rankings as well by having links to non-suitable websites.

Using an anti-spam plugin adds a hidden field that can tell if the comment is from a real-life person or a bot and filters out these bad bot comments. I recommend any WordPress users use Akismet or anti-spam by Webvitaly plugins.

3. SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. It’s all good to create a website or have one created for you, however, if it’s not optimized for search engines you will never make it to the first few searches for your keywords. For WordPress users, I recommend the Yoast SEO plugin. Also make sure your website is linked to google search console, once this is done then your website will be submitted to Google. You can do this through the Bing search engine tool as well.

4. WEBSITE ANALYTICS. To help improve your website sales you need to monitor your website visitors. Setting up a google analytics account and linking it to your website is required. For WordPress users, I recommend Google Analytics for WordPress by Monster Insights so you can monitor your visitors from your website dashboard.

5. WEBSITE BACKUP. Most hosting providers regularly backup for your website on either a weekly or monthly basis however if something happens to their backup then you want to be able to have access to a backup yourself. Plus hosting providers often charge to restore a backup so you should already have a backup ready. For WordPress users, my personal favourite plugin is UpdraftPlus Backups.

6. PRIVACY POLICY These are actually required by law, if you collect personal data from users such as name, email, address etc from newsletter sign ups, online contact form, shopping cart etc. In fact, search engine companies such as google say that they will place a website with a privacy policy above one that doesn’t have one so I would say it’s essential. Michelle Whitehead is a lawyer that can create a privacy policy suitable for your business for around $100

7. TERMS & CONDITIONS A Terms and Conditions agreement isn’t essential but highly recommended to have for your website. It’s basically a set of regulations which users must agree to follow in order to use your services. Also known as Terms of Use, Terms of Service, or Disclaimer. Its best to visit a lawyer to write out your terms and conditions, however, you can also create basic ones for your site.  Michelle Whitehead is a lawyer that can create a Terms of service suitable for your business for around $100

8. FAVICON That little icon that sits on the internet address bar. Normally a smaller version of your website or the image icon. These are great for people that have multiple website tabs open or that have bookmarked your website as it helps to identify your website’s brand.

9.COPYRIGHT Having All rights reserved copyright and the year indicates that the copyright holder reserves, or holds for its own use, all the rights provided by copyright law. Apparently, this is no longer a legal effect, but it’s better to have this then not to I reckon.

10. LICENSING. Have you checked all your fonts, media and images are either free to use or you have a paid license for them. Also, make sure you haven’t copied any website content directly from any other websites or books.

11. BLOG Even if you are not a blogger, all websites need to have a blog. You can call this articles, information etc. It helps to keep your website up to date and fresh and have visitors continually come back and look for more information and potentially then buy your products or services. Also the more visitors you have the better that your website will rank in search engine rankings. We can help you create blog posts to improve your SEO.

12. LOCATION Even if you work at home, having your location listed is essential. Why? This is part of your local SEO and will help you rank in search engines for your town. It’s so easy to start local, most people trust and prefer local businesses. This doesn’t mean you have to put your full address down, just your town, state, and country. If you are a location-based business then make sure you include a map that links to directions, so people can easily find you.

13. SPELLING I was terrible at English and I still am.  To help check your website for grammar and spelling errors, I use is Grammarly. Grammarly hold’s my hand and correct any misspelled words and corrects sentence’s for me, whilst editing a word document, website or any other file.

14. SSL CERTIFICATE. Having an SSL certificate is one way you tell if the website is secure, so rather then having the http:// in front of your domain name you will have https:// to state it is a secure and trustworthy website. Having an SSL is essential for all websites. Websites with an SSL certificate are more likely to rank higher in search engines. Talk to us about getting an SSL certificate for your website.

15. SPEED You need to check your website is running fast so your visitors don’t become frustrated and leave. Check your speed on free services like GT Metrix or Pingdom they will not only tell you your website speed but also what is causing your website to run slow from large images etc. If your website is running over 8 seconds and you have optimized (We can help you optimize your website speed) everything then you may want to consider changing to a fast more reliable hosting like Siteground or our hosting website services.

16. SOCIAL LINKS & SHARES. If you are not on facebook then you’re definitely missing out on potential clients, but that’s for another day. I know I like to stay connected and remember businesses so I always follow and share them through Facebook and Instagram. There are other people that prefer Twitter, Pinterest etc So make sure you are on at least have one social media account for your business that is linked to your website and that potential customers have the ability to share your products and services to all social media platforms. This is more free advertising for you if someone shares one of your cool products or services.

17. OPT IN/ CALL OF ACTION/ NEWSLETTER/ EMAIL FUNNEL SEQUENCE. A lot of people don’t buy from you the first time, they might look at your website, remember some awesome product/ services then leave. 6 months later they think about that product/ service but have totally forgotten your business. They search for your products/ services but a similar item comes up and they buy that. That could have been your sale! If you have an opt in/ call of action button for them to get a 10% discount for first time buyers or a free guide, etc and then regularly send them out weekly or monthly newsletters through an email funnel sequence. That means your business will keep popping up in their head so when they are ready to buy that product, they know exactly where to find it from.- You. I personally recommend Mailerlite as email marketing platform.

18. TESTIMONIALS A great way for a potential customer to read what clients already think about you and give them more confidence to buy your product or service is by having testimonials on your website.

19. SEARCH TOOLS- If a person can’t find what they are looking for then they are more likely to leave your website if you don’t have a search tool on your site. A search tool allows customers to use keywords to search what they are looking for.

20. CONTENT– Having a clear focus of who you are, what you do and how you can help your ideal customer is essential so your website visitors get a feel to see if you’re a good fit. Make sure you are talking to your ideal customer through your website content to attract them.

21. ABOUT PAGE. Yes, it’s scary as hell to put yourself out there. I have spent over 9 years being hidden away, not wanting anyone to know my name or what I look like. But if someone connects with you then they are more likely to use and recommend you in business. So add a photo and include how you go started in business, your experience and even a little info about your hobbies, fav food etc. Since doing through, my business has doubled.

22. GENERAL SETTINGS. Check all your settings are correct (WordPress users click on settings and general in their dashboard) from tagline, email address and time zone settings. Also under settings and readings make sure its unticked to Allow Search Engine Indexing.

23. PERMALINKS To make sure your website is user and search engine friendly than not using numbers or dates in your page and post url is a good practice. WordPress users can go to settings and permalinks in their dashboard and make sure the common setting is set as post name.

24. CLEAN UP. A good thing to do to save clutter is to remove all pages, posts that are not being used, from sample and demo content, as your sitemap filled up with unnecessary pages and posts. Check and remove unused images as well, as this will help to clean up your disc space of your website. Also go through and disable and delete unused plugin functions as this will also help to speed up your website.

25. MOBILE FRIENDLY. Test your website that its mobile friendly and looks good on different browsers. Google has a free mobile-friendly test at https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly and using a tool like Browsershots is very useful.

26. MONITORING. It’s good practice to set up an uptime motoring service. They basically alert you when your website is down. No hosting provider can guarantee 100% uptime so once in a while they may have a glitch that your website is down for a few seconds. downnotifier.com offers a free service to monitor your website.

27. BROKEN LINKS. We often change page names and links so it’s a good idea to check for broken links. Google search console will alert you of these but I also love using https://error404.atomseo.com

28. FORMS You should double check all your forms from contact forms, booking, shopping carts etc work properly.This avoids having frustrated customers.

Amazing websites to find professional stunning stock images

When it comes to creating online content, there is always a need for high-quality images. It is a well-known fact that images speak better than words.

Whether you are creating new blog posts or need quality images for your websites, or social media you will always need stock images that can attract and impress your visitors. There are many websites claiming to offer stock images, either for a price or for free. So how do you choose the right one that can specifically address your needs?

Here are some of my favourite websites where you can find stock images.

1. Negative Space

Negative Space is a UK based website that uploads new free stock images every week. The site offers all the photos in its inventory without any copyright limitations. The platform allows contributors to add their high-quality images. Negative Space allows you to subscribe to its newsletters that keep you updated about new image additions.

You can find images under all the common categories ranging from technology to architecture. The site makes it easier to filter through its gallery. The collection is sorted not just according to category, but also on colour and copy space position.

2. Pexels

Pexels is a popular website offering free stock photos. Similar to Negative Space, it allows users from worldwide to upload their images. All additions go are curated to ensure that only high-quality images are added. The site allows you to browse photos based on themes like locations, emotions, and more. It also allows you to search for anything specific. It is widely popular amongst the designing community.

3. Death to Stock

This stock photos website has a unique system. It allows you to subscribe to their service and the latest sets of images are sent to your inbox on a monthly basis. However, it also allows you to search for the required images. Death to Stock has both free and paid plans. The premium plan costs $15 a month. Interestingly, the company uses the profits generated for funding photo-shooting trips to keep growing its inventory.

4. Pixabay

Pixabay offers a huge inventory of stock photos in the public domain. It has over 0.78 million free images, illustrations, and vectors. It has a simple user interface that makes it easier for everyone to navigate and find the required images. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t offer advanced filter options. You can filter your search query using the following factors from the search bar:

  • Media Type
  • Colour
  • Orientation
  • Minimum Dimensions

5. Canva

I love canva as well as having amazing stock images i do all my designs for my social media on here and create basic logo’s for clients that need something temporary while their logo is being designed. It has both free and paid images from $1usd. It’s a much have tool for any business do it yourselfer.

There are many other popular websites for finding stock images.

Almost all are equal in terms of the size of their image databases and features. This includes HubSpot, Picjumbo, Gratisography, Unsplash, Creative Market, Big stock and Life of Pix amongst others. Most of these platforms offer both free and premium memberships for different types of users.

11 ways to tighten up your Website Security for WordPress

I love working with WordPress as a Website design platform as it offers so many easy functions, however, it can be a tricky job to keep WordPress websites secure. Many statistics have proved that hackers target WordPress websites more, and many WordPress website developers or owners aren’t aware of its security measures. It means WordPress gets vulnerable attacks if you don’t have proper security measures hence why my team and I have pulled together some useful security tips for making your website more secure and stable.

Below are some important tips on how to secure your website and stop it getting hacked.

1. Set up Website Lockdown

This security feature is very important, if you fear your website of getting vulnerable attacks from hackers or competitors. This Lockdown feature can solve a huge problem of login failure attempts.  It means, whenever there’s a repetitive hacking attempt with wrong passwords, the website will get locked and the owner will get notification for this unauthorized forceful login activity, i.e. no more continuous forceful attempts. Wordfence or iThemes Security plugin can be best for security measures since it prevents forceful login attempt attacks. By using this plugin you can specify a certain number of failed login attempts, after which the plugin bans the attacker’s IP address.

 

2. Using 2-Factor Authentication Feature

At the login page, using a 2-factor authentication (2FA) feature is also good for security measure. This is one of the lost secure forms of authentication as the attacker would need to know your username, password and have access to your mobile phone to receive the code or be able to answer secret question etc to login.  The Wordfence Premium or Itheme Premium plugins can use this.

3. Using a hard Login Username

Using a hard to guess username is a more secure approach. The reasons are quite obvious, as user names can be easily predicted, if it’s something like admin, administrator or a domain email address. Using your name or you name with middle name or surname and year of birth or a personal email as you’re username can be beneficial for this purpose and stops people from easily guessing.

4.Login Page URL Renaming

When attackers or hackers know your website login page direct URL, they can try to brute force. They attack by trying to log in with their GWD (Guess Work Database, i.e. a database of guessed usernames and passwords, (e.g. username: admin and password: p@ssword and billions of such passwords). By default, the WordPress login page can be accessed easily via wp-login.php or wp-admin added to the site’s main URL. Changing the login URL is an easy thing to do therefore you should replace the login URL and get rid of 99% of direct brute force attacks.

5. Change Your Passwords Frequently

Always keep a habit to change the website’s passwords regularly, Always use strong passwords by adding uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers or special characters. Password generator is a useful resource to get variations of strong passwords. This helps to secure your website and avoid harmful attacks from hackers.

6. WP-Admin Directory Protection

The heart of any word press website is wp-admin directory, so if this part of your website gets attacked then the entire website can be damaged badly. The best possible way to avoid attacker is to have the wp-admin directory password protected. Whenever any changes is need to the wp-admin directory you can access it with the password you have assigned for that protection. You can either manually code the .htaccess file or get hold of the AskApache Password Protect Plugin for securing complete admin area. It auto generates a .htpasswd file, which can be configured for password permissions.

7.Using SSL to Encrypt Data

One of the smart moves is to secure your admin panel by using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate. This helps to secure data transfer between server and the browser, which makes very hard for an attacker to hack the connection. You can purchase SSL certificate for your word press website from dedicated hosting companies. SSL certificate also gives better ranking in search engines as such web sites should be secure to visit.

8.Secure Your Files and Data Base from Threats

Most of the threats attack website’s data base and files therefore you have to use extra security to avoid such attacks by monitoring everything.  This can be easily done with the Wordfence or the Ithemes premium security plugin. This plugin gives protection from all the latest threats and guards the data base and files from malicious attacks done by hackers. Wordfence plugin also provides firewall and scan option.

9.Take Regular Back Ups

Always have a habit to take complete website back up, no matter how much secure is your word press website is. Keeping an off-site complete backup always benefits you to restore your word press website and keep it in a working state any time. There is an inbuilt option in word press for back up of the data base and files. But you can also have plugin to backup and restore them back to the website. My personal favourite plugin is UpdraftPlus Backups.

10.Update Plugins Regularly

Serious troubles can occur if you aren’t updating your word press theme or plug in. Remember updates are to fix bugs and security threats. Every software product gets supported by the developers and gets updated now and then, but word press gets updated frequently. These updates fix bugs and also have important security patches. Hackers usually target websites that aren’t updated on a regular basis. So get serious and start updating your word press, but be careful of badly coded plugins when updating as this can cause your website to crash, so if you don’t feel comfortable, get your website tech person to manage these updates.

11. Remove WordPress Version Details

Anybody can easily find your word press website version number, as it can be viewed in source code of the website. Hiding it can prevent the hacker to attack the website. So you can use security plug-in that will hide your word press version details or add some code to remove it.
